Our robotics team is from Clark Magnet High School in La Crescenta, California. Our school, being a magnet school, is focused primarily on science and technology. Here at Clark we have an excellent robotics program in order to familiarize students with some of the elements of future careers in the technology and engineering fields. The basis of our program is the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics competition. Each January, we are given a kit of parts including motors, a control system, electronics, and other assorted parts. From the date that we receive the kit of parts, we are given a six-week time period to design and develop a fully-functioning radio-operated robot. This robot must compete in a specialized game unique to each robotics season. With the help of JPL engineers, we start from the ground up designing a chassis, drivetrain, and other specialized subsystems for the robot. Once our designs are finalized, the parts ordering begins. When we receive our parts, we then fabricate all of the pieces necessary to make the robot operational. Unlike BattleBots, FIRST robots play a game in which they help each other. FIRST teams make alliances to help each other to perform tasks such as placing soccer balls in goals.
